Ami is a DJ, party promoter, record store owner and occasional writer who spends her time building community through music in Hong Kong. Through her party Bad Times Disco, she already brings together a diverse crowd in a city that can often feel socially and economically divided, with local Chinese, Western expatriates, Southeast and South Asian Hong Kongers, and members of the East Asian diaspora all sharing the dancefloor. Inspired by a regular attendee named Ken — a retiree who passionately supports the city’s independent music scene — Ami wants to host an intergenerational dance party that brings younger and older people together in the same space. In a city with one of Asia’s oldest populations, this kind of mixing is surprisingly rare. With the $500, Ami will help create a night where different generations can connect through music, challenge stereotypes about ageing, and show that the joy of dancing doesn’t belong to any one age group.
