Gene is a humble, quietly heroic man who has carried heavy family burdens while still showing up, every single week, to buy bread, peanut butter and jelly from the local discount store and organise this act of generosity. He even teaches the ladies the trick of spreading peanut butter on both slices to stop the jelly soaking through. Jan wants to surprise Gene by funding their PB&J ministry to cover the growing cost of ingredients - a small celebration for a man who would never expect it, but deeply deserves it.
